What if Success Didn’t Mean Four Years of College?

I have onboarded close to 250 students this past week and had the chance to speak with them one on one, in large groups, and in small groups.

In one small group, a student opened up about not having a plan after high school. He told me that all of his friends already knew they were going to college, but he did not see that path for himself. That conversation reminded me how important it is to talk about the other opportunities that exist after graduation because the truth is, not everyone takes the same path, and that is okay.

Not everyone needs to follow the same path after high school and that is okay. College is a great choice for many, but there are other careers that might be the best fit for you right now.

The World Needs Skills

The truth is, the world needs people who know how to do. Skilled trades, first responders, and the military are wide open opportunities, and the pay is stronger than most students realize.

If you go into a trade like electrical work, HVAC, or welding, you can come out of training making 45,000 to 60,000 dollars a year to start. With experience and certifications, many skilled tradespeople earn 80,000 to 100,000 dollars or more annually. These are jobs you can start in less time and with far less debt than a four year degree.

First Responders Make an Impact

First responders are also in demand. Firefighters, EMTs, and police officers step into careers that bring benefits, stability, and respect, often earning 50,000 to 70,000 dollars within just a few years on the job.

The Military Builds Careers

The military is another strong option. Recruits not only earn pay right away, but also receive housing, healthcare, and education benefits. Many leave the service with training and certifications that transfer directly into civilian careers that pay well above average.
