Students Are Graduating Maritime School Before High School in Jacksonville

Something real is happening in Jacksonville, and this is exactly the direction workforce development needs to go.

For the first time, students are graduating from a maritime training program before they even graduate high school.

Through a partnership with Bluewater Maritime Training Center, local public high school students were given the opportunity to step into a real training environment while still finishing school.

This Is What It Looked Like

12 students were accepted into the program.

They balanced their high school schedules while completing maritime training at the same time—and they finished.

Now, these seniors are about to graduate high school with something most students don’t have:
a clear path and the ability to go straight into the workforce.

Why This Matters

We talk a lot about preparing students for the future, but most systems still make students wait until after graduation to figure things out.

That doesn’t work for a lot of the students we serve.

This model flips that.

Instead of waiting, these students:

  • Got exposure early
  • Built real skills
  • Positioned themselves for immediate opportunities

They’re not guessing what’s next—they already know.

Where This Is Going

This is the type of model I believe in.

Education and workforce shouldn’t be separate conversations. They should happen at the same time.

If we can continue building partnerships like this, we’ll start to see more students graduating with both a diploma and a direction.

This is just the beginning, and I’m excited to see how it grows over the next few years.
