Talk to Your Guidance Counselor

Sometimes school can feel like a maze—and trying to figure out your future can feel even harder. But one of the best resources already in your school is your guidance counselor. They’re there to help you find your path, even if you’re not sure where to start.

Here are three tips to help you get the most out of a conversation with your counselor:

1. Be Honest About What You Need

You don’t need to have everything figured out—just be real. Whether you’re thinking about college, a trade, the military, or just getting through the year, tell your counselor where you’re at. You’re not expected to have all the answers, but being honest helps them help you.

Example: “I’m not sure if college is for me. Are there other options I should look into?”

2. Ask Specific Questions

Counselors talk to a lot of students, so make the most of your time. Go in with a few questions prepared. That shows you’re serious and helps keep the meeting focused.

Try asking things like:

  • “What classes should I take if I want to work in healthcare or construction?”
  • “Can you help me find a program that teaches job skills?”
  • “Are there any events or workshops coming up that I should join?”

3. Follow Up

Your future doesn’t get built in one meeting. After you talk to your counselor, take the next step—whether that’s filling out a form, joining a program, or just checking in again later. Don’t be afraid to reach out more than once. The more they see your effort, the more they can support you.

Remember: Guidance counselors are there to guide, not judge. Use their knowledge. Ask questions. Follow up. This is your future—you deserve to have someone in your corner.
